Why 20 Years of Spiritual Practice Hasn't Set You Free (And What Actually Does)

If you've been practicing for a decade or more and something still feels missing, this isn't another technique. It's a direct pointing to what you've always been.

The teaching will appear here once the video is published.

Read what was spoken

For those who prefer the written word, or who want to return to a particular passage. The words are a trellis. You are the vine.

I · The Invitation

If you've been seriously practicing for ten, fifteen, twenty years — and there's a part of you that's tired…

…a part of you that wonders, quietly, whether this is ever actually going to work…

…I want you to stay with me for the next twelve minutes.

Because I'm going to say some things that most spiritual teachers won't say. Not because they don't know — but because it's bad for business.

pause

Here's the first one: the practices you've been doing for twenty years?

They were never going to set you free.

Not because they're wrong. Not because you did them wrong. But because freedom isn't on the other side of practice. It never was.

I know how that lands. I've said it to students who've cried. Because somewhere underneath all the discipline and all the retreats and all the hours on the cushion, there's been this quiet hope that one day — if you just practice hard enough, long enough, sincerely enough — it'll finally happen.

That hope is the thing keeping it from happening.

II · Who I Am

I'm Maitreya. I teach in the non-dual tradition, and I had what people call an awakening at twenty-one — unasked for, uninvited, and honestly, inconvenient at the time.

What I learned on the other side of that is what I want to share with you now. Not as another technique to add to your pile. As a direct pointing to what you already are, underneath all the seeking.

In the next ten minutes, I'm going to do three things. I'm going to show you why practice alone can't get you there. I'm going to point — directly — to what can. And then, if you're willing, we're going to do it together, right now, while you're watching.

Okay. Let's begin.
III · The Pointing

So if practice isn't the path — what is?

I want you to do something with me right now. You don't need to close your eyes. You don't need to sit a certain way. Just keep reading.

settle

Notice that you are aware.

Right now, reading these words — there is awareness of the screen. Awareness of the body sitting wherever it's sitting. Awareness of thoughts moving through.

That awareness — I want you to notice — is already here. You didn't have to do anything to produce it. You didn't have to meditate to turn it on. It's been here all day. It was here when you woke up this morning. It was here twenty years ago when you first started seeking.

This is the first thing nobody tells you clearly:

The awareness you've been trying to attain is what's reading these words right now.
let this land

Now — the mind will object. The mind will say: but this can't be it. This is too ordinary. I'm looking for something luminous, something ecstatic, something that will finally feel like enlightenment.

That objection is exactly why you haven't found it.

You've been looking for a special state. But what you are isn't a state. States come and go. Bliss comes and goes. Peace comes and goes. Even the deepest samadhi — comes and goes.

What you are is what notices states coming and going. And that has never come or gone.

IV · An Inquiry

Let me ask you something. Take a moment before you answer.

Has there ever been a time — in your entire life — when you were not aware?
take your time

You can't find one. Can you?

Even in your memories of suffering — awareness was there. Even in sleep, something knew you slept. Even in the moments you felt most lost — the knowing of being lost was itself awareness.

You have never, for one moment, been separate from what you've been seeking.

V · Where Is the Seeker?

Now here's the second thing.

The reason twenty years of practice hasn't delivered you — is because practice assumes there's someone who needs to get somewhere. The practitioner, trying to reach the awakened state.

But look. Right now. Where is that practitioner?

When you stop for a moment and just notice this — this bare, open awareness that's already here — where is the one who needs to get anywhere?

don't fill the silence
The seeker is a thought.

Awareness is not a thought. Awareness is what knows the thought.

And in the moment you recognize that — even for a second — the whole project of seeking reveals itself as a kind of beautiful misunderstanding. Not a mistake. Not a failure. Just a case of looking for your glasses while wearing them.

VI · Not Wasted

I'm not saying your practice was wasted. It wasn't.

Every hour on the cushion, every retreat, every book you read — it all brought you here. To this moment. Where you can finally hear what was always true:

You are not a person trying to become awakened. You are awareness itself, temporarily believing it is a person who needs to become something.
VII · Stop Seeking

So let's try something different.

For the next thirty seconds — don't practice. Don't try to meditate. Don't try to reach anything.

Just stop seeking.

Just for thirty seconds, drop the project. Drop the practitioner. Drop the one who's trying.

And notice what's already here, underneath all of it.

Thirty Seconds of Silence

Close your eyes if you'd like. Or keep them open. Simply rest.

That.

That quiet, open knowing — that was here before you started reading. It'll be here after you close this page. It's been here your whole life, waiting for you to stop looking past it.

That is what twenty years of practice was pointing toward.

And the strange, almost funny thing — is that it was never far away. It was just closer than practice could reach.
